50th Anniversary - Dr. Cambell

The third annual Facilities Management Alumni and Friends Dinner was held in the Assembly Hall at the Gordon B. Hinckley Alumni Center on March 23, 2017. More than 50 guests attended including alumni, industry professionals, and students. It was a wonderful night as alumni were able to reconnect, students networked with industry professionals, awards were presented, and those present learned from Leland Mason as the keynote speaker. Kyle Jardine, a two-year graduate of the BYU FM program and the chair of the Industry Advisory Council (IAC), was the host of the evening. He introduced Professor Michael Bown, director of the FM program, to present the Industry Recognition Award. This year’s award was presented to Leland Mason. Mason is currently the Facilities Manager for meetinghouses of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He has done much to support the FM program at BYU, including helping many students receive internships and gain experience at the LDS Meetinghouse Facilities Department in the Church. Mason is an experienced facilities manager and is responsible for the maintenance and standards for 7,000 facilities and 19,000 buildings worldwide. He spoke about the difficulties of a fast-growing Church: “As the Church doubles in size every year, facilities managers constantly have to strive for cost-effective solutions to maintain a high standard of cleanliness.” It is their job to pay close attention to the details and find solutions to problems that will enable meetinghouses to be high-functioning while retaining their beauty for years to come. He also advised the students on how to be successful in their future careers, saying, “Use your talents and the gifts you’re given, and someday you will get to where you want to be.” He emphasized the importance of students using their personal strengths to propel their careers. This was a wonderful evening spent amongst friends of the FM program. Next year’s dinner will be in March in correspondence with the IAC meetings. Mitch Larson, an alumnus and project manager at Lockheed Martin says, “I look forward to the Alumni Dinner to celebrate another successful year with people in the industry and my fellow students.”​​

The Facility & Property Management Program, led by Professor Michael Bown, has helped to fill a large demand for qualified managers to run some of the largest business, medical, government, and university campuses in the world. The program is well established and is broadly seen as the best facility and property management program in the world. FPM students enjoy a close relationship with their professors, and have the opportunity to work on research projects and participate in industry conferences each year. All FPM students do meaningful internships around the country during their education, and many of these internships lead to job offers upon graduation. More than half of practicing facility and property managers are within 10 years of retirement, and FPM students are in high demand to fill these roles.
